The Risks of Heat and Why Comfort Matters

Director’s Insight: The Risks of Heat and Why Comfort Matters

Heat exhaustion is a real concern in workplaces, especially in industrial, outdoor, or poorly ventilated spaces. After 25 years in the heating, cooling, and ventilation business, I’ve seen how unchecked heat affects not only safety but also productivity and morale.

When Heat Becomes a Problem

Heat exhaustion happens when the body can’t keep cool, which can occur in temperatures as low as 30–32°C if workers are exposed for long periods or doing physical tasks. At 33–36°C, symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and nausea can kick in within a few hours. Above 37°C, the risk skyrockets—heat exhaustion can hit in as little as 30 minutes, and heat stroke becomes a real danger.

Why Comfort Impacts Performance

Even if heat exhaustion doesn’t happen, working in a hot environment takes its toll:

  • Slower Work: Employees tire faster, focus less, and make more mistakes.
  • Lower Morale: A hot, uncomfortable workplace sends a message that health isn’t a priority, which can lead to dissatisfaction and even higher turnover.
  • Missed Opportunities: An uncomfortable team is far less productive than one working in a cool, safe space.

Keeping your workplace cool isn’t just about safety—it’s about helping your team perform at their best.

Simple Steps to Beat the Heat

Thankfully, heat-related issues are preventable with a few practical steps:

  • Invest in Cooling Equipment: Industrial fans, portable air conditioners, or evaporative coolers can make a big difference.
  • Hydration and Breaks: Make water easily accessible and encourage breaks in shaded or cooled areas.
  • Monitor Temperatures: Keep an eye on conditions and act fast when they rise.
  • Show You Care: A comfortable workplace isn’t just good for health—it shows employees that their well-being matters, boosting morale and loyalty.

Final Thoughts

A cool and comfortable environment keeps your team safe and productive while showing that you value their health. Whether it’s a warehouse, workshop, or outdoor site, tackling the dangers of heat is a smart move for any business. A little investment in cooling goes a long way—for safety, efficiency, and trust.
